What You Should Know about Phishing
A huge thank-you for choosing to visit and reading the following article. Great choice, hope you will enjoy it.
Phishing is a common online fraud scheme that is growing in occurrence, and becoming more sophisticated over time. If you have spent any time on the Internet or have an email account, you may have seen this scam in action. What happens is that victims are tricked into providing important financial and personal information by criminals who appear to be trustworthy businesses.
Email plays a very important role in this scam. You might get an email that looks like it's from a company you have an account with such as a bank. PayPal and Ebay are common guises for phishers to use. Some people have even reported receiving scam emails from phishers posing as the IRS! This email will look authentic to the untrained eye, featuring details such as company logos and fake addresses that can trick consumers. However, if you know about this scam, you're more likely to avoid it.
Some phishing emails, such as those appearing to be from Ebay, have some common giveaways. One is that the salutation says something like, 'Dear Ebay member' rather than your Ebay username. If you ever see an email like this, you can automatically assume that it's fake. Another way to tell is by the contents of the message. The message will attempt to collect information such as usernames, passwords, account numbers, credit card numbers, or refer the victim to a fraudulent site where this information is collected. Often you will be told that your account has been hacked into, is in danger of being closed, or has some kind of other urgent problem. Once the phisher has obtained the information, they will often use it to open and max out new accounts and even run up existing accounts as well.
There are new ways for online users to avoid becoming the victims of a phishing scheme. Many browsers, such as the newest version of Internet Explorer, have options where you can turn on antiphishing protection. This protection will alert you if you happen across a web site thought to be fraudulent. The best way to avoid becoming the prey of a phisher is to never, ever transmit sensitive information via email or instant message for any reason. Report all suspicious emails you receive as spam and delete them immediately.
