Internet Identity Theft -- A Growing Problem

What follows is the result of comprehensive research and documentation. This article has been created after the study of many resources.

The Internet is a part of today's global society that many people cannot imagine life without. People communicate, learn, play, shop and so much more on the World Wide Web. However, there are downsides to this kind of technology, and of of them is the crime of Internet identity theft. Identity theft is a crime of fraud where the perpetrator assumes another's identity for the purposes of committing a crime, like theft. While the online version of this crime is quite similar to the offline version, there are some differences. Let's take a look at how and why identities are stolen online.

The first way identities can be stolen on the Internet is through a scheme called phishing. This con involves the criminal posing as a trusted person from a company the victim deals with already. This might be a bank or store. Some common phishing schemes lately come in the guise of popular online establishments Ebay and PayPal. It usually works like this: The victim gets an email that looks like it came from a trusted establishment. This email states that there is an issue with the account, or that the account has been fraudulently used. Then, it will request the victim's password, account number or even credit card number for identity verification purposes. After the phisher obtains the personal information, they can cause all sorts of damage. They can often open new accounts in the victim's name or access existing accounts.

Fraudulent transactions on the Internet are also a common occurrence with online identity theft. The thief uses another's identity to order merchandise from online shopping sites. It's like shoplifting, only a bit more complex. Not only is the store affected, but so is the person who's identity is being used. Criminals using fraudulent credit cards and fake identities can commit their crimes a great deal faster than they could in person. This is one reason why the occurrences of online fraud have grown in number over the years.

The authorities are cracking down on Internet identity theft. The Federal Trade Commission is an agency that specializes the prosecution of both online and offline cases of this crime. Prevention is the best thing you can do when it comes to fighting all kinds of identity theft and fraud. People who do find themselves victims of identity theft should alert their bank, credit card companies, credit bureaus, and the FTC of the incident as soon as possible to avoid potentially damaging loss.
