The story is really about identity theft. Remember that law enforcement would never ask you to use your money for an investigation -- and identity theft protect yourself means turning the cops onto the people who asked you to do so.

Another popular scam involves con artists who call up pretending to be your credit card company, claiming you have fraudulent charges. They ask you to confirm your identity and ask "security questions" such as: your credit card number, full name and expiry date. A word to the wise: Beware of anyone who calls asking you for credit card information or personal data. Instead, hang up, and call the credit card company to confirm suspicions. Doing this helps protect yourself from identity theft.
